Happy Valentine’s Day 2023!
This past year has caused us increased reflection and an even deeper appreciation for our lives and relationships. In addition to our loss of a dear friend, we have seen the decline of another and of a beloved cousin of Jan. Yet we are grateful in our knowledge of a divine plan for this life and the life to come.
Our greatest joys continue to be precious moments with our children, grandchildren and our friends. We love being in nature and are so grateful we can easily walk in such a beautiful area of the nearby three adjacent parks in Southeast Denver/Greenwood Village.
Fred has experienced an increase in memory challenges that have been greatly frustrating to him. Also, he had three falls which caused some considerable damage and pain. He has been working very hard to recover and has tried to return to walking about 15,000 steps per day when he is able to do so. The cold weather and snow has limited this during the past few weeks. He has been serving as the building coordinator for our church and supervises the Saturday volunteer cleaning crew, including dozens of hours of shoveling himself to keep the church sidewalks safe.
Jan is still tutoring academics and seeing children for speech-language therapy, including several children of former students…such a joy! Family history/genealogy and making a family history book with about 40 pages of photos for each grandchild is one of her passions. Also, gathering a collection of about 100 favorite books per grandchild selected from almost 80 boxes of children’s books when we eliminated our larger storage unit this past year is part of her legacy. She serves in the nursery at church, which she has done for probably over 40 years since coming to Denver almost 46 years ago.
In August Jan flew to Salt Lake as the guest of Dee Ann and Richard Ludwig to attend BYU Education Week and to spend time with the Ludwig family, including their grandchildren, three of whom she has been tutoring remotely. Working on family history and taking daily walks were also so enjoyable! What a great joy it was to be with dear friends!
In October Jan flew to San Francisco as the guest of Eve Dror at her lovely “dollhouse” home with orange and lemon trees and a “garden of Eden”. We had so much fun, also with her two children and their families, as Eve toured Jan all over…to Golden Gate Park and a circus, to the ocean, Filoli Gardens, Stanford, a redwood forest for a fun hike, Farmer’s Market, etc. How absolutely fun it was to be with Eve and her family, to laugh, walk daily and have fresh orange juice!!
As we have for the past many years, we so enjoyed the holidays with our children and their families…Christmas Eve and morning with Jill’s family; Christmas evening of gourmet food and games with Scott’s family and the Hornick clan’s celebration at David’s home with multiple game venues and fun food.
One of the holiday highlights was when Scott and Monica took us to dinner two days after Christmas at a really fun downtown Denver restaurant, A5, followed by attending a van Gogh Immersive Exhibit. Other highlights at Christmas are always the Messiah, the Meistersingers (our local HS choir) and assorted parties and events.
We send our very best wishes to each of you,
Fred and Jan
