Hornick Family 2026 - Fred and Jan - #51

Dear Family and Friends,

Hoping each of you have had a healthy and enjoyable past year. We are so grateful for each day we have together, for our wonderful, growing family and dear friends. It is always so fun to connect with each of you throughout the years, whether in person or by card, text, email or phone.

Our greatest joys this past year have been the major accomplishments of our grandchildren and celebrating our 50th anniversary in July. Even though she officially graduated December 2024, our granddaughter, Lauren Hornick, daughter of Scott and Monica, received her diploma, along with her fiancé, Tyler Parker, on May 9th, 2025. Both graduated in Business and Accounting from Colorado Christian University.

On May 22nd, our grandson, Titan Moyer, son of Jill and Jared, graduated from Legend High School. He was accepted at Brigham Young University, though he chose to postpone attending to fulfill a two-year mission to Singapore. He began his mission in July and was in the far eastern part of Malaysia for his first six months. Recently he was transferred to Singapore, an entirely different experience. His older brother, Jacob, has been in Vietnam serving since August of 2024. He spent most of his mission in Ho Chi Minh City/Saigon in the south, though was recently transferred to Hanoi in the north. Both are having truly impacting experiences.

In July of 2024 our son, David, his wife Anne and daughter Sarah moved to Spain. They loved living in Barcelona and enjoyed the opportunities afforded them to travel throughout Europe and beyond. Prior to their returning, they graciously hosted Jill, Titan and Jan for five days in June. We joined them for a day trip to the stunning Costa Brava and another day for a tour of Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia, and then we wandered the historic “Old Town” of Barcelona, especially the Gothic Quarter. We also spent a day in Girona exploring the Roman walls and the city.

Following Spain, David had arranged for several days in Lyon and in Paris for the three of us. Though there was so much to see and do in Lyon, the highlight was a five-hour cooking class with a terrific French chef. While Spain and Lyon had been sweltering in the 90’s, Paris was boiling at 100 degrees. As a result, our nighttime tour to the Eiffel Tower was canceled. Nevertheless, we greatly enjoyed the Louvre, D’Orsay Museum, French cuisine, and exploring Paris streets and parks.

After the intense heat of Spain and France, we were looking forward to the cooler mountains of Switzerland. First, however, we went to beautiful Montreux on Lake Geneva (Swiss Riviera) at the foot of the gorgeous Alps. Nearby we enjoyed fascinating Chillon Castle, paddle boarding on Lake Geneva (Jill and Titan), and eating the best pizza ever. From Montreux we traveled to Grindewald and up to Pfingstegg. Another day we visited Mount Pilatus and then Mount Titlas a third day. We were able to tobaggan down the steep mountainside, go tubing on a glacier, zipline through a tall mountain forest, and participate in a Ninja-Warrior type of “high adventure” experiences…the latter for Titan and Jill only! We also enjoyed historic Geneva and a day in Zurich. Such a memorable trip!

While Jan was on the three week trip to Europe, Wayne Stewart came to stay with Fred. They went hiking, out to dinner (though Wayne is a terrific cook), and to the Temple often. In fact, Fred was moving with much greater agility upon Jan’s return…Wayne made the time like a vacation for Fred! Though Fred has experienced some ongoing challenges, especially in short-term memory and balance, he still is very active and tries to walk 10,000 steps daily, especially when the weather allows. He also continues to love attending our Denver Temple several times weekly. We both indeed treasure each day we have together!

The highlight of the year was the fairytale-like wedding of Lauren to Tyler Parker on July 26, 2025. It was held at a lovely event center with the ceremony taking place in one of the arbored gardens followed by a delightful reception and luncheon, beautifully presented. After a brief honeymoon, the new couple made their home in the recently completed new townhome they had purchased following their graduation from college. Both are now employed as tax accountants at separate firms in the DTC (Denver Tech Center), not far from their home.

Throughout the year we enjoyed several weekends with Moyer boys, sometimes four of them, with trips to the parks, Denver Museum of Nature and Science and Qdoba. Fred and I enjoyed hiking whenever we could find the time, especially when we joined our Greenwood Village Ward group for camping in Golden Gate State Park and then with the Moyers on Labor Day weekend along with other hikes at Mount Falcon with Kimberly Spears.

Each March and October, Jan enjoys a very relaxing week with dear friend, Eve Dror, in California. We take many walks, some hikes, visits to beautiful Filoli gardens and hiking trails, occasional musical events, and time with Eve’s wonderful family. We both look forward to those precious times!

The Holidays are always such a treasured time for us! We enjoyed Christmas Eve and morning at the Moyers’ home, time with David, Anne and Sarah in the afternoon, and then evening until late with Scott’s family for a fabulous dinner and some games. Time with family is like a glimpse of Heaven!

We wish for each of you a healthy and happy 2026 with many blessings!

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Fred and Jan

We loved exploring Lyon: the Roman amphitheaters and walls, the Notre Dame de Fourvière Basilica, the food and the silk weaver’s building art. Jill and Titan were very happy to connect with friends while in Lyon, too. They arranged a meeting near a large market, then we saw them again when we attended church at a branch or ward in Lyon. June 28th, 2025

Out of all the many churches, cathedrals and basilicas we saw, this was my favorite: Notre Dame de Fourvière in Lyon, France. It is only about 130 years old and was completed with private funds. The mosaics are stunning!
