Fred & Jan - # 47

Happy Valentine’s Day 2022!

How grateful we are for our faith, family and friends…and the times we have been able to gather once again. Certainly Covid-19 impacted more of our family members in 2021 than the previous year. Shortly after we sent our last Valentine’s letter Fred developed symptoms of Covid and was hospitalized for three weeks! Jan experienced a much milder case a few days later. We are so grateful for outstanding medical care!

In May our close friends of four decades, Wayne and Claradene Stewart, came to stay with us prior to departing for their second mission, to the St. Louis, Missouri Mission. We enjoyed our long walks, meals and time together.

The highlights of our year continue to be time spent with our family and friends…especially with our grandchildren. We enjoyed watching Lauren perform, usually remotely, in her Senior year gymnastics meets, Jacob and Titan in soccer, in person…and some of the others in a few church and school events, including the graduation from Kindergarten of the triplets.

In June Fred and I went to Salt Lake to attend the wedding of Jan’s brother, Barney, to the gracious Claudia Fornage. It was a lovely ceremony followed by a luncheon at Market Street Grill in the Cottonwood area. We stayed with Laura Stewart Hightower and her family, and had great fun with them and her sister Tami and family. It was also wonderful for Jan to spend time with Bonnie Bowen and Fred with Gert Kristiansen.

The end of July we had a terrific Hornick family reunion orchestrated and hosted by David at an agri-resort near Carbondale and Glenwood Springs. We stayed variously in a yurt, tents, and farmhouses. With the exception of the oldest two grandsons, Austin and Parker who were unable to attend, our three children and their families all came. Fred’s brother Chris and his wife Kathy also joined us for the activities. We went on a great nature hike on the Grotto Trail near Aspen. Most of us went into an ice cave and (mini) cliff diving into frigid water. One afternoon the children attended Pony Camp, and learned horse-riding skills. One evening David arranged for a guitarist to entertain us who also sang and played a harmonica. Another evening we went to the famous Glenwood Springs pool. He also scheduled a photographer who took family photos. It was a really fun gathering, and we look forward to next year’s reunion!

The premier event for the Hornick family was the wedding of our first grandchild, Austin Hornick, to his beautiful bride, Elizabeth Poppe, in a lovely wedding ceremony at St. John’s Church in the Washington Park area of Denver on October 7th. A fun reception was held at an event center in Denver.

We now have two grandchildren, Austin and Parker, in the workforce; one in college at Colorado Christian University, Lauren; two in high school, Jacob and Titan, and the remaining six in elementary school.

Fred has been retired for eight years now. Jan continues to love working with children in tutoring academic subjects and speech-language pathology…in person and remotely. Currently six of her students are children of former students!

We so appreciate staying connected with you and send each of you our best wishes for a fun Valentine’s Day!

Love,

Fred and Jan
